Community Information
The La Crosse Area
|
You’ll find housing in the La Crosse
area to be very well constructed and
convenient to both work and play.
Our metropolitan area is comprised
of approximately 155,000 people and
most people feel that they need not
live more than 20 miles from
downtown La Crosse to find a type of
property they’re interested in
purchasing. We have a wide variety
of topography, but the Bluffs and
Coulees (Valleys) are what we are
known for. The Mississippi River is
a primary source of year-round
recreational activities. Whether
you’re into duck hunting or ice
fishing or painting or water-skiing,
you’ll find new friends along the
Mississippi. |

Octoberfest parade in La Crosse |
|
Our area has always found ways to
celebrate the out-of-doors and the
importance of leisure time
activities to the people who live
here. It started over 35 years ago
with Oktoberfest in the first week
of October and it’s grown into
Sunfish Days, June Dairy Days,
Riverfest over the 4th of July,
Catfish Days, Applefest, Jazz Fest,
and Cornfest. All of the neighboring
communities have volunteer groups
that put on terrific parades,
outdoor activities, and other family
oriented festivals.
Medical care in our area is a prime
reason La Crosse is always high on
the list of communities nationwide
where quality of life is important.
Two large medical facilities,
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center or
Franciscan Skemp Mayo Healthcare not
only provide fine medical care, they
are two of our largest employers.
The University of Wisconsin system
is finishing a facility here to
train physician assistants, working
in conjunction |
|
with UW-La Crosse and the two
hospitals. Our two universities,
UW-L and Viterbo University and our
Western Wisconsin Technical College
provide educational opportunities
that lead to careers on our own
medical community. |

|
|
|
We may be an Old River Town, but
we’re rapidly becoming a gathering
point for the fine arts, too. The
musical training begins early in the
fine schools in our area, this
continues through the universities,
and is enhanced by a great La Crosse
Symphony, a season of Bright Star
programs through Viterbo University,
and many, many community theater
productions and an active local
United Fund for the Arts. You’ll be
able to satisfy your hunger for fine
arts and meet others who have that
same love and become as active as
you wish. Great friendships are made
because of these activities. |

Riverside
Park |
|
And, you must visit downtown La
Crosse. In the past five years the
Mainstreet Initiative has
transformed our historic downtown
district into a charming, well lit,
pedestrian friendly shopping and
office center. You can even ride on
old-fashioned trolley shuttle free
throughout our beautiful river town.
Make sure you visit the brand new,
interactive, Children’s Museum. Walk
along our River’s Walk and welcome
the large Mississippi Queen and
other large paddlewheelers when they
stop in La Crosse.
And, finally, you’ll find a great
public school educational program in
our various community schools. La

school opened in 1857. Wisconsin is
well known for its public schools
offer a wide range of programs and
activities that are the basis for a
well-rounded graduate. Whether it’s
one of the many award winning bands,
show choirs, wind symphonies,
orchestras, or art shows your
student will be exposed to, you can
count on your children finding a
program through our schools that
will help them develop a love of
music, art, theater, science, math,
etc. Our students test very high on
all the national tests, our schools
spend a much higher per student
amount to offer these programs than
most schools, and our administrators
are focused on providing the most
for the students. |

RE/MAX office in La Crosse |
|
Here at RE/MAX First Choice we’ve
had many, many opportunities to work
with people transferring in from
other areas of the world. We know
how important a change like this
becomes to everyone involved. We are
aware of the family dynamics and
will go the extra mile to insure
that everyone in the family has as
much information as |

they need to make the move a better
one. Please ask us to help.
From our interaction with
transferring families we do know how
surprised many are at our
educational system, our community
activities, our churches, our low
crime rate, the quality of our
housing, and the friendliness of the
people. And we also know that when
someone has to move again, just how
hard it is to leave the many friends
they’ve developed while they’ve
lived here. We call it God’s Country
and we’re proud of our area. Let us
share our knowledge with you.
